Winter is here again, snow, ice, bad roads ..you name it.

What you don't want is a burst frozen pipes and thousands 

of pounds of damage to your home.

Freezing temperatures can cause your water to freeze.

When the pipes thaw, the ice expands and either splits your water

pipes or forces off any pipe connector near by.

The result either way.. is a lot of water leaking and a lot of damage..

( typical cost to put is right is £15,000)

Only  today a person  from the UK called and ordered a Floodguard from his temporary rented caravan.. with  his wife and kids!!. after coming home from holiday and finding £200,000 worth of damage .. and.. nowhere to live!!.

What a nice way to spend Christmas!

A Floodcheck (r) basic Auto model  today cost just £78.00 .Fitting is D.I.Y.  or about £80.00 to have it fitted by a plumber..It  would have prevented this.

I understand his  insurance company  have now refused to give him Water damage cover unless he fits a Floodguard.( nice of them... thanks )

And they now want £450 excess for any future water damage  claim he might have.

  B/ Turned off your water supply.when your not at home

  C/ Fitted a device like a Floodcheck(r) which turns the water off .

Please note: Even if your water is turned off , if the pipes are full of water they could still burst when they thaw out.. But only the water in the pipes can leak out..so it is still advisable to  drain the pipes down.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET FROZEN PIPES

If the pipes have not already split and burst already, it is odds on  they will when the thaw starts . So follow these steps right now.

1/  Find the main  shut  off valve ( stopcock) to you premises.

It may be under the sink unit, in the corner of the bathroom,

but you need to find it!

When you do, turn it CLOCKWISE as far as it will go. If it is already frozen and you cant turn it. boil a kettle and soak a towel in hot water and wrap it around the tap.Eventually it will thaw out and you can turn it. 

 Hopefully you have now shut off the main water supply.

Now open fully any taps over the sink or bath ,This will release the pressure and allow some room for expansion.

Again if the are frozen and wont turn use some hot towels.

If you have not water and you cannot get hot towels  you can use a hair dryer.But be careful  to only apply it for a few seconds at a time.

Eventually you will get your water restored.

To avoid it it happening again while the freeze is on. place a small electric fire in the room to keep the temperature  above freezing.

Try to put insulation around all exposed pipes.

Tip.If you keep one tap running just a tiny bit it will stop the water freezing..
